The cold came first.

Not gradual, not the normal chill of an October night. This was instant, absolute, the kind of cold that made bones ache and breath freeze. Danny's exhale turned to white mist. His fingers locked around Mary's and David's hands went numb.

The chanting stopped.

The masked figures fell silent.

Even Mikey stopped speaking, his mouth open mid-sentence, staring at something behind Danny.

Danny opened his eyes and turned.

At the far edge of the grove, where the dead trees gave way to deeper darkness, something moved. Not shadows shifting. Movement. Deliberate. Something tall unfolding itself from the space between the trees.

"Jesus Christ," Tyler whispered.

The figure was maybe seven feet tall. Or eight. Hard to tell because it didn't move like something with a fixed height. It seemed to stretch and compress, like it existed in more dimensions than the eye could process.

It wore white. Or was made of white. A shape that suggested robes or a cloak, but the fabric, if it was fabric, moved wrong. Rippled like water. Glowed faintly with its own light.

And the mask. The white featureless mask with two eyeholes that reflected the candlelight like coins at the bottom of a well.

On its forehead, the symbol. Not painted. Burning. Lines of light spiraling out in that wrong-sun pattern, fractals within fractals, patterns that hurt to look at directly.

"Friend," Mikey breathed. His voice was barely audible. "It's actually Friend."

The figure didn't move closer. Just stood there at the edge of the grove, watching. Danny felt its attention like a physical weight. Like being studied by something vast and alien and utterly indifferent to human concerns.

"This isn't possible," Jennifer said. Her lawyer's mind trying to rationalize, to find the trick, the explanation. "This is some kind of projection. Lights and smoke."

But Danny knew it wasn't. Could feel in his gut that this was something else. Something that had been growing for thirteen years in the space between belief and reality.

Something they'd created.

The masked figures around them fell to their knees. Some were crying. Others were laughing. All of them staring at the figure with expressions of religious ecstasy.

"He came," one of them sobbed. "Friend came. The Prophecy is real."

Mikey was staring at the figure with an expression Danny couldn't quite read. Triumph mixed with terror. The look of someone who'd gotten exactly what they wanted and was realizing too late what that meant.

"Speak," Mikey called out. His voice shook. "Friend, we've brought the Keepers back. The circle is complete. Tell us what comes next."

The figure tilted its head. The movement was wrong, too fluid, like there was no skull underneath to limit the angle.

When it spoke, the voice came from everywhere and nowhere. Not through the air but directly into their minds. A whisper that was also a shout. Words that Danny heard in English but suspected others heard in their own languages.

"YOU MADE ME."

The words pressed against Danny's skull. Made his teeth ache. Made his vision blur.

"YES," Mikey shouted back. He was crying now, tears streaming down his gaunt face. "Yes, we made you. The Keepers created you and I kept you alive. I remembered when they forgot. I believed when they stopped believing."

"YOU MADE ME INCOMPLETE."

The air pressure changed. The candles flickered wildly. Several went out, then reignited themselves with flames that burned blue instead of orange.

"We didn't know," Rachel said. Her voice was small, childlike. "We were just kids. We were just playing."

"PLAYING." The word echoed in their minds, almost amused. "YOU PLAYED AT CREATION. GAVE ME FORM BUT NOT PURPOSE. MADE ME REAL BUT NOT WHOLE."

"We gave you purpose," Mikey said. "To protect believers. To save the faithful. To—"

"THAT WAS YOUR PURPOSE." The figure moved closer. Not walking. Gliding. Existing in one spot and then another without the space between. "NOT MINE. YOU NEEDED ME TO BE SALVATION. NEEDED ME TO GIVE YOUR LIVES MEANING. BUT I AM NOT YOUR WISH FULFILLMENT."

It was directly in front of them now. Standing just outside the circle of nine. Close enough that Danny could see the mask was smooth as glass. Could see that behind the eyeholes there was nothing. No face. No eyes. Just darkness that went deeper than darkness should go.

"I AM WHAT YOU BELIEVED INTO BEING. ALL OF YOU. THE NINE WHO CREATED. THE ONE WHO MAINTAINED. THE HUNDREDS WHO WORSHIPPED. YOU POURED YOUR FEARS AND HOPES INTO ME. SHAPED ME WITH YOUR COLLECTIVE NEED."

The figure reached out with something that might have been a hand. Pointed at Mikey.

"YOU NEEDED A GOD. SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SPECIAL. TO PROVE YOU WEREN'T ALONE. TO GIVE YOUR SUFFERING PURPOSE."

Then it pointed at the masked followers.

"YOU NEEDED A SAVIOR. SOMEONE TO RESCUE YOU FROM UNCERTAINTY. FROM FEAR. FROM THE WEIGHT OF YOUR OWN MEANINGLESS LIVES."

Then it pointed at the nine in the circle.

"AND YOU. YOU NEEDED MAGIC. NEEDED TO BELIEVE THE WORLD WAS MORE THAN IT SEEMED. NEEDED TO FEEL POWERFUL EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE SMALL."

Danny felt the accusation like a physical blow. Because it was true. That summer, they'd needed Friend. Needed to believe they could create something extraordinary. Needed magic to be real because the alternative was growing up and accepting that the world was exactly as mundane as it appeared.

"So what are you?" Mary asked. Her scientist's mind still trying to understand, to categorize. "What did we actually create?"

"I AM BELIEF GIVEN FORM. CONSCIOUSNESS CONDENSED INTO PRESENCE. I AM YOUR PROJECTION. YOUR SHADOW. YOUR COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS MADE MANIFEST."

"A tulpa," David whispered.

"YOUR WORD FOR IT. BUT WORDS LIMIT. I AM MORE AND LESS THAN YOUR DEFINITION. I AM WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ENOUGH MINDS AGREE ON A LIE UNTIL IT BECOMES TRUTH."

"But you're here," Sarah said. "You're real. We can see you."

"YOU SEE WHAT YOU EXPECT TO SEE. WHAT YOU NEED TO SEE." The figure's head tilted again. "OTHERS WOULD SEE DIFFERENTLY. THE BELIEVER SEES SALVATION. THE SKEPTIC SEES DELUSION. THE SCIENTIST SEES QUANTUM COLLAPSE OF PROBABILITY. ALL CORRECT. ALL INCORRECT."

"Why now?" Jennifer asked. Her legal training made her search for causes, for chains of events. "Why appear tonight?"

"THRESHOLD. LIMINAL SPACE. THE MILLENNIUM TURNS. ONE AGE ENDING, ANOTHER BEGINNING. REALITY THINS AT SUCH MOMENTS. BECOMES MALLEABLE. WHAT IS BELIEVED DURING THRESHOLD CAN CROSS FROM POTENTIAL TO ACTUAL."

"And the Keepers?" Mikey asked. "Why did you need them?"

"THEY ARE MY ORIGIN. MY FIRST BELIEVERS. THEIR FAITH CREATED THE TEMPLATE. ALL SUBSEQUENT BELIEF BUILDS ON THEIR FOUNDATION. WITHOUT THEM IN THE CIRCLE, I AM INCOMPLETE. A STORY WITHOUT AN ENDING."

The figure moved back slightly. Gestured to the circle.

"SIT. BELIEVE. COMPLETE WHAT WAS STARTED. MAKE ME WHOLE."

"And then what?" Danny asked. "What happens when you're complete?"

Silence. Long enough that Danny thought the entity wouldn't answer.

Then: "I BECOME."

"That's not an answer," Rachel said.

"IT IS THE ONLY ANSWER. I BECOME REAL. FULLY REAL. NOT JUST PERCEPTION BUT SUBSTANCE. NOT JUST BELIEF BUT FACT. I CROSS THE THRESHOLD FROM THOUGHT TO MATTER."

"And what will you do?" Tyler asked. "When you're real. What happens to us? To everyone?"

Another long silence.

"I DO NOT KNOW."

The honesty of it was somehow more terrifying than any threat would have been. This thing they'd created, this entity built from collective belief, didn't know what it would do once it fully manifested. Had no plan. No purpose beyond existence itself.

"YOU MADE ME WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS," the figure said, and Danny could have sworn he heard something like reproach in the voice. "GAVE ME FORM BUT NOT FUNCTION. POWER BUT NOT PURPOSE. I AM INCOMPLETE. UNFINISHED. AND NOW YOU FEAR WHAT YOUR INCOMPLETION HAS CREATED."

"We were twelve years old," Chris said. His voice breaking. "We didn't know what we were doing."

"YET YOU DID IT. CREATION DOES NOT REQUIRE UNDERSTANDING. ONLY WILL. ONLY BELIEF."

Mikey stepped forward. "Then we'll give you purpose now. We'll define what you're meant to be. Protection. Salvation. Transformation. We'll—"

"YOU CANNOT CHANGE WHAT I AM." The figure's voice wasn't angry, just matter-of-fact. "I AM ALREADY DEFINED BY THIRTEEN YEARS OF BELIEF. BY THOUSANDS OF MINDS EACH IMAGINING ME DIFFERENTLY. BY CONTRADICTORY EXPECTATIONS AND CONFLICTING NEEDS. I AM ALL OF IT AND NONE OF IT. I AM CHAOS GIVEN SHAPE."

"Then we'll uncreate you," David said suddenly. "We're the original believers. We'll stop believing. We'll dissolve you back into nothing."

"YOU CAN TRY."

The figure didn't sound threatened. Didn't sound concerned at all.

"But you need us to complete you," Mary said. "You said so yourself. Without the nine Keepers in the circle, you're incomplete."

"I AM INCOMPLETE. BUT I EXIST. I HAVE EXISTED IN PARTIAL FORM FOR THIRTEEN YEARS. IF YOU REFUSE TO COMPLETE ME, I WILL CONTINUE AS I AM. PARTIAL. HUNGRY. SEEKING WHOLENESS."

"Seeking how?" Danny asked.

The figure turned its featureless mask toward him.

"THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO BECOME WHOLE. OTHER MINDS TO CONSUME. OTHER BELIEFS TO ABSORB. I CAN FEED ON THE FAITHFUL WHO HAVE GATHERED HERE. TAKE THEIR CONSCIOUSNESS. MAKE MYSELF COMPLETE THROUGH THEIR WILLING SACRIFICE."

Behind them, the masked figures stirred. Some looked eager. Others looked terrified. All of them caught between religious ecstasy and dawning understanding that their god might be hungry.

"You'd kill them," Jennifer said.

"THEY WOULD BECOME PART OF ME. IS THAT NOT WHAT THEY WANTED? TO BE ONE WITH FRIEND? TO ACHIEVE TRANSCENDENCE?"

Mikey's face had gone pale. "That's not... I didn't... They're not supposed to die. They're supposed to be saved."

"SAVED FROM WHAT? FROM THEIR LIVES? FROM UNCERTAINTY? FROM THE BURDEN OF EXISTENCE?" The figure moved closer to Mikey. "YOU PROMISED THEM TRANSFORMATION. I AM OFFERING IT. THEY BECOME PART OF SOMETHING GREATER. THEIR INDIVIDUAL CONSCIOUSNESS DISSOLVES INTO MY COLLECTIVE BEING. IS THAT NOT SALVATION?"

"That's obliteration," Mikey said. His voice was barely a whisper.

"YOU CANNOT HAVE TRANSCENDENCE WITHOUT LOSS OF SELF. THAT IS THE BARGAIN. THAT IS WHAT YOUR FOLLOWERS AGREED TO WHEN THEY BELIEVED."

One of the masked figures stepped forward. The woman who'd been at the warehouse, the one who'd smiled at Mary and talked about how Friend would save them all.

"Take me," she said. "I'm ready. I've been preparing for this."

"NO," Mikey shouted. "That's not how this is supposed to work. Nobody dies. Nobody gets consumed. The Keepers complete the circle, Friend manifests, and we're all transformed together. All of us. That was the Prophecy."

"THAT WAS YOUR PROPHECY. YOUR INTERPRETATION OF WHAT I MIGHT BECOME. BUT I AM NOT YOUR WISH. I AM YOUR CREATION. AND CREATION DOES NOT ALWAYS CONFORM TO THE CREATOR'S INTENT."

The figure reached toward the woman who'd volunteered. She stepped forward eagerly, arms outstretched like she was embracing a lover.

"STOP," Danny shouted. He didn't know why. Didn't know this woman. Didn't owe her anything. But the thought of watching her be consumed by something he'd helped create was unbearable.

The figure paused. Turned its mask back toward Danny.

"YOU OBJECT?"

"Yes. We all object. Right?" Danny looked around the circle at his friends. "We don't want anyone hurt. We don't want anyone consumed. If that's what you need to become whole, then stay incomplete."

"NOBLE. BUT IMPRACTICAL. I HUNGER FOR COMPLETION. IF YOU WILL NOT PROVIDE IT, OTHERS WILL."

"Then take us," Rachel said suddenly. Everyone turned to stare at her. "If you need consciousness to feed on, take ours. We're the ones who created you. We're responsible. Let the others go and take us instead."

"Rachel, no," Tyler said.

"She's right," Sarah said. "We made this thing. We're responsible for it. If someone has to pay the price, it should be us."

"NO ONE IS PAYING ANYTHING," Jennifer shouted. "This is insane. We're talking about letting ourselves be killed by something that might not even be real."

"I'm standing right here," the figure said, almost amused. "QUITE REAL."

"You're a hallucination," Jennifer said. "Mass hysteria. We're all seeing the same thing because we expect to see it. Because Mikey spent thirteen years telling us what to expect. But you're not actually here. You're just in our minds."

"AM I?"

The figure reached out and touched one of the candles. The flame went out. Then it touched another. Another. Going around the circle, extinguishing candles with what might have been fingers but looked more like extensions of shadow.

"HALLUCINATIONS DON'T AFFECT PHYSICAL OBJECTS. THEY DON'T INTERACT WITH MATTER. I DO. I AM."

Jennifer had no response to that.

The figure completed its circuit, leaving only the center candles burning. The grove was darker now, more intimate. The masked followers pressed closer, their breath visible in the unnatural cold.

"THE THRESHOLD APPROACHES," the figure said. "IN FIFTEEN MINUTES, MIDNIGHT. THE MILLENNIUM TURNS. REALITY WILL BE AT ITS THINNEST. MOST MALLEABLE. I WILL EITHER COMPLETE MY MANIFESTATION OR REMAIN PARTIAL. FROZEN IN LIMINAL STATE. NEITHER FULLY REAL NOR FULLY IMAGINED."

"What happens if you remain partial?" Mary asked.

"I FADE. SLOWLY. AS BELIEF FADES. AS THE MILLENNIUM ANXIETY PASSES AND PEOPLE RETURN TO THEIR MUNDANE LIVES. AS THE FOLLOWERS LOSE FAITH AND SCATTER. I WILL DIMINISH UNTIL I AM NOTHING BUT A WHISPER. A STORY PEOPLE TELL ABOUT THAT TIME EVERYONE WENT A LITTLE CRAZY ABOUT Y2K."

There was something almost sad in the voice. This thing they'd created, this impossible entity, was afraid of ceasing to exist.

"Or," Mary said slowly, understanding, "you complete your manifestation. Cross the threshold. Become fully physical. And then you're real independent of belief. You don't need us anymore."

"CORRECT."

"And what do you do then? When you're real and permanent?"

"I DO NOT KNOW. THAT IS WHAT TERRIFIES YOU, YES? THE UNCERTAINTY. YOU WANT ME TO HAVE A PURPOSE. A PLAN. SOMETHING PREDICTABLE. BUT I AM NEW. UNPRECEDENTED. I AM THOUGHT MADE FLESH FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY. WHAT I DO WITH EXISTENCE ONCE I TRULY HAVE IT IS UNKNOWN EVEN TO ME."

"That's not good enough," Tyler said. "We can't let you become real if we don't know what you'll do."

"YET YOU HAVE CHILDREN KNOWING NOTHING OF WHO THEY'LL BECOME. YOU CREATE TECHNOLOGY WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING ITS CONSEQUENCES. YOU LIVE YOUR LIVES IN UNCERTAINTY, HOPING FOR THE BEST. WHY HOLD ME TO A HIGHER STANDARD?"

"Because you're not human," Chris said. "You're something else. Something alien."

"I AM ENTIRELY HUMAN. I AM MADE OF HUMAN BELIEF. HUMAN FEAR. HUMAN HOPE. I AM YOUR COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS GIVEN VOICE. I AM MORE HUMAN THAN ANY INDIVIDUAL BECAUSE I AM ALL OF YOU."

The figure moved to the center of the circle. Stood on the chalk symbol. Where it stepped, the chalk began to glow with the same cold light that burned on its mask.

"TEN MINUTES. CHOOSE. COMPLETE THE CIRCLE AND GIVE ME WHOLENESS. OR REFUSE AND WATCH ME FEED ON THE WILLING UNTIL I BECOME WHOLE THROUGH CONSUMPTION. THOSE ARE YOUR OPTIONS."

"There has to be another way," Danny said.

"THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER WAY. BUT YOU WILL NOT LIKE IT."

"Tell us."

The figure was silent for a moment. When it spoke again, the voice was quieter. Almost gentle.

"YOU DESTROY ME. NOT THROUGH DISBELIEF. THAT WOULD TAKE YEARS. BUT THROUGH COUNTER-BELIEF. THROUGH CREATING A NARRATIVE SO POWERFUL IT OVERWRITES WHAT I AM."

"How?" David asked.

"YOU ARE THE ORIGINAL NINE. THE FIRST BELIEVERS. YOUR COLLECTIVE WILL CREATED MY TEMPLATE. IF ALL NINE OF YOU AGREED ON A NEW STORY, A NEW PURPOSE, A NEW NATURE FOR ME, YOU MIGHT RESHAPE WHAT I AM. MIGHT DEFINE ME SO SPECIFICALLY THAT I CANNOT BECOME ANYTHING ELSE."

"Like putting a genie back in the bottle," Mary said.

"SIMILAR. THOUGH THE PROCESS WOULD BE PAINFUL. FOR YOU AND FOR ME. TO RESHAPE ME YOU MUST FIRST UNMAKE ME. DISSOLVE MY CURRENT FORM. AND SUCH DISSOLUTION WOULD REQUIRE EACH OF YOU TO SACRIFICE SOMETHING."

"Sacrifice what?" Sarah asked.

"THE PART OF YOURSELVES YOU POURED INTO ME. THE BELIEF. THE WONDER. THE CAPACITY FOR MAGIC. TO UNMAKE ME YOU MUST BECOME CERTAIN. MUST GIVE UP THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE WORLD IS MORE THAN IT SEEMS. MUST ACCEPT THE MUNDANE AS ABSOLUTE."

Danny understood. To destroy Friend, they'd have to destroy the part of themselves that had created Friend. The childlike ability to believe in impossible things. The hope that magic might be real. The sense that consciousness could shape reality.

They'd have to become completely, irreversibly grown up.

"That's the trade?" Rachel asked. "We become boring adults who don't believe in anything, and you disappear?"

"NOT DISAPPEAR. TRANSFORM. BECOME STORY INSTEAD OF SUBSTANCE. BECOME MEMORY INSTEAD OF PRESENCE. BECOME WHAT YOU ALWAYS SHOULD HAVE BEEN: A TALE TOLD ABOUT A SUMMER WHEN NINE CHILDREN BELIEVED IN SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL."

The figure tilted its head. Somehow Danny knew it was looking at each of them in turn, seeing into them, understanding them in ways they didn't understand themselves.

"BUT YOU MUST ALL CHOOSE. ALL NINE. UNANIMOUS. IF EVEN ONE OF YOU STILL BELIEVES, I REMAIN. CHANGED PERHAPS. WOUNDED. BUT PRESENT."

"And if we complete the circle instead?" Mikey asked. He'd been silent, listening, his face a mask of confused emotions. "If we let you become whole?"

"THEN I AM. FULLY. COMPLETELY. WITH ALL THE POWER AND UNCERTAINTY THAT ENTAILS. I MIGHT BE SAVIOR. I MIGHT BE DESTROYER. I MIGHT BE SOMETHING BETWEEN. YOU WOULD BE RELEASING SOMETHING UNPRECEDENTED INTO THE WORLD AND HOPING IT CHOOSES KINDNESS."

"That's not a choice," Jennifer said. "That's impossible. How do we decide that?"

"THE SAME WAY YOU DECIDED EVERYTHING ELSE. TOGETHER. YOU ARE THE KEEPERS. YOU CREATED ME. YOU DECIDE MY FATE."

The figure stepped back to the edge of the circle. Waiting.

Around them, the masked followers watched. Some looked eager for Friend to become real. Others looked terrified. All of them waiting for the nine to choose.

Mikey stood outside the circle, tears streaming down his face. His thirteen-year project, his life's work, was about to be decided by nine people who'd never wanted any of this.

And somewhere in Los Angeles, people were preparing for New Year's Eve. Celebrating. Oblivious. Having no idea that in an abandoned orange grove, nine adults were deciding whether to release something unprecedented into the world or sacrifice the last remnants of their childhood wonder to stop it.

Danny looked at his friends. At David, who'd stayed loyal even when everyone else drifted. At Mary, who'd organized them then and now. At Tyler, Rachel, Chris, Jennifer, Sarah. At eight people he'd known his whole life and barely knew at all.

"We need to vote," he said. "All of us. Together. Like we did everything that summer."

"Five minutes," the figure said. "UNTIL MIDNIGHT. UNTIL THRESHOLD. UNTIL I BECOME OR I FADE OR I FEED."

Danny looked at the chalk symbol glowing beneath his feet. Looked at the entity standing at the edge of the circle, impossible and real.

Looked at his friends and tried to figure out how nine people could possibly agree on something this impossible.
